But my idea of great comedy does not include slapstick, when the characters are not funny but ridiculous. A grain of intellect is always a must, no matter if it is a comedy or not.

I also do not really appreciate dark comedy. I do not understand how the misfortunes of others can ask me to cry one minute and laugh the next. So, I guess I can be fairly picky. But, I do appreciate different genres. For example, science fiction has always been a favorite, as long as it is not too gross. I am not much for blood and guts.

'Clerks': The Passion of Kevin Smith

Kevin Smith's 'Clerks', released in 1994 and now considered a modern-day classic, started off as an idea while Smith was an employee at the Quick Stop convenience store and RST Video in his native New Jersey. Inspired by Richard Linklater's 'Slacker', the 'Divine Comedy' by Dante Algihieri and Smith's own experience of working in the convenience store, it was an inspired piece of film making about the malaise facing people in their early 20s, as viewed through the eyes of two convenience store clerks, Dante Hicks and Randall Graves.

The film was shot at the actual convenience store Smith was working at, and it would ultimately go on to win several awards, kick-starting a Hollywood career for Smith and proving that hard work and dedication can, in film-making, make up for a lack of big budget and experience.

The film itself was shot in black-and white over a course of 21 days using a 16mm Arri SR-2 camera and used Kodak Plus-X film, which added a sense of realism to the film; almost making it seem like viewers were seeing CCTV footage of what went on inside the heads of the protagonists working dead-end jobs.

In order to avoid disrupting the business of the convenience store, Smith was only allowed to film inside the shop while it was closed, meaning all the interior shots were done between 10:30pm and 5:30 am. To accommodate for the lack of sunlight Smith incorporated a plot device that someone had jammed chewing gum into the steel shutters, thus forcing them to be shut during opening hours. Between working in the store during the day and shooting at night, Smith slept no more than one hour a day and by the end of the shoot was falling asleep during the filming of some of the most dramatic scenes in the film.

In order to finance the making of the film, Kevin Smith maxed out between eight and ten credit cards each with $2000 limits, sold a sizeable amount of his extensive comic book collection, which he would later be able to buy back, and dipped into a portion of funds set aside for his college education. All in all the film cost US$27,575 - barely anything in the film industry.

After making the rounds at film festivals, 'Clerks' came to the attention of Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein at the Sundance Film Festival, who gave the film a quick overhaul and decided to distribute it through Miramax Films. The film received a major label soundtrack, the rights of which cost US$27,000 to acquire, meaning the soundtrack was more expensive than the production budget, a first in cinematic history.

The film became a surprising success at the cinema, making over $3,151,000 gross in the United States alone. It also received international popularity and acclaim, winning the Award of the Youth and the Mercedes-Benz Award at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival. In the decade since its release, 'Clerks' has become a cult classic, and is regularly ranked as one of the best films of the 90s. In 2006, British film magazine Empire listed 'Clerks' as the 4th greatest independent film of all time.

After 'Clerks', Smith would go on to write and direct critically acclaimed and financially successful films like 'Mallrats', 'Chasing Amy', 'Dogma' and most recently 'Clerks II', but it all started with 'Clerks', showing how passion and a DIY work ethic turned an average Joe into a Hollywood director.

DVD Review: The Simpsons Movie

Those yellow, animated phenomenons have finally made their way to the big screen and it only took eighteen years. So does the animated movie live up to the hilarity of the television show? Read on and find out - doh!
The town of Springfield's lake is overly polluted and socially conscious Lisa Simpson (Yeardley Smith) rallies the town to clean it up. Her dad Homer (Dan Castellaneta) saves a pig from being slaughtered after it's used as a prop in a Krusty the Clown commercial and starts to treat it like the son he always wanted.

This doesn't set well with Bart (Nancy Cartwright) who finds that Mr. Flanders (Harry Shearer) is a more caring father than his pig loving one. Homer's new oinking child does what pig's do and Homer puts the results in a huge silo in the backyard (well, Homer did put a little of himself into the job). His wife Marge (Julie Kavner) tells him to get rid of the silo of pig waste.

Homer does of course, by dumping it on Lake Springfield. This infusion of pollution causes the Environmental Protection Agency to become alerted to the situation. They react in their usual restrained manner - the director Russ Cargill (Albert Brooks) orders that a huge glass dome cover the town.
The Simpsons eventually find themselves outside the dome and Homer decides to take off rather than help his neighbors (especially since they formed an angry mob against him when they found out that it was his silo that pushed the lake over the limit). He takes the family to Alaska and start over again, but the rest of the family thinks they should return and save Springfield.

The Simpsons have been a television hit since they started airing in 1989. There's always been talk that creator Matt Groening should bring his jaundiced creations to the big screen. He's seemingly been happy on the small screen but it has finally come to pass and the results are hilarious.
The film does play like a bigger and extended episode of the television show. It has some hilarious commentary on society as well as just outright wacky comedy. One bit of commentary has the church folk running to Moe's bar and the bar patrons running to church as the giant dome of doom is placed over the town.

We also have an extended Bart dare as he skateboards in the buff down to the Krusty Burger. Not to mention the "Spider Pig" song that my kids would sing during the theatrical trailer.

Where this disc lets down a little is not in the content of the film but in the special feature department. It feels really rather light and you keep thinking that a more expansive special edition will be in the works somewhere down the line - doh!.

The Simpsons is presented in anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1) and is enhanced for 16x9 televisions. A fullscreen version is available separately. Special features include two commentary tracks.

The first one features writer/creator Matt Groening, writer/producer James L. Brooks, writer/producer Al Jean, writer/producer Mike Scully, director David Silverman, Yeardley Smith, and Dan Castellaneta, and the second one includes director Silverman, and sequence directors Mike B. Anderson, Steven Dean Moore and Rich Moore.

There are 5 minutes of deleted scenes introduced by Al Jean. The "Special Stuff" section has 3 minutes of Simpsons appearances on the Tonight Show, American Idol, and a parody of the "Let's go to the Lobby" concession stand spiel. That's it. Seems pretty light to me.

The movie is hilarious, but the extra features feel like a bit of a letdown as far as deleted scenes go, the commentaries are top notch. It's well worth it for the film. I must knock it down a bit because it could've been a bigger set (and I suspect will be somewhere down the line).

First of all, if you want to "get under the hood" and see how films are made then your first stop should be Production Central, Production Central area of Universal Studios. Located just beyond front gates of Universal Studios, you'll find yourself in the middle of a real working film and television production studio.

And while you are in Production Central you can treat yourself and your family to a spectacular Shrek adventure. Shrek 4D features an original 3D film which the studio says is produced with Ogrevision. Here you can join Shrek, Donkey and Princess Fiona on a wild adventure. According the Universal Studios website, "You see, hear and actually FEEL the action right from your seat! If you love motion simulator rides, you'll love Shrek 4-D."

Were you thrilled by the movie "Revenge of the Mummy?" And do you like roller coasters? If you answered yes to either of these questions then you will enjoy the Revenge of the Mummy ride. Here is how Universal describes it, "Plunge into total darkness as you face fireballs, scarab beetles, and an army of warrior mummies on a psychological thrill ride totally unlike anything that's come along in the past 3,000 years!" That, sounds like something that will delight any family of film lovers.

Would you like to protect the earth from an alien attack? Then you should hop onboard the Men in Black Alien Attack ride. Universal has created 120 alien species for this attraction. Each six passenger vehicle is equipped with laser guns and "As an agent trainee, you'll zap aliens as you chase them through the streets of New York in this high-tech ride based on the hit movie."

The Terminator series of films was an imaginative look at the future, and the Terminator attraction at Universal Studios lives up to the legacy of that popular trilogy. The attraction is called, "Terminator 2: 3-D Battle Across Time," and it is said to be one of the more elaborate and technologically advanced theme park experiences ever created. All Terminator fans will get a kick out of this ride.

Are you ready to withstand the all out attack of Jaws? Then get on board the Jaws ride at Universal but be careful because you're gonna need a bigger boat! Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, a giant fin slices through the waves and you're suddenly face to face with three tons of Great White fury.

In addition to high tech thrill rides, Universal offers plenty of outdoor entertainment. There is a Blues Brothers show, a tribute to comedy queen Lucille Ball and a monster themed Beetlejuice Graveyard Revue, complete with screamin' demons and wailing guitars.

Universal has produced rich load of imaginative films and characters and the Studio draws on them to the maximum to create a theme park that will live up to and exceed your expectations.

Movie Review - Sweeney Todd

Having never seen the stage version of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, I can't speak to the fidelity the film shares with the play. That said, let there be no doubt that Tim Burton has crafted a true piece of musical cinema from Stephen Sondheim's bloody masterpiece. To their discredit, early previews have hedged a bit regarding the singing in the film. In them we only see Johnny Depp canting some recitative as he prowls the streets of London. While this scene is certainly in the movie, it's barely representative of the actual film which contains at least a dozen fully-staged numbers and only intermittent dialogue.

As the former Benjamin Barker, Depp is magnificent as Todd. His voice may lack the thunder that would be expected on stage, but on the big screen it's more than suitable. Purists may find it a little ragged and flat at times--Michael Crawford needn't worry about Depp--but it's an ideal manifestation of the corrupting anger and rotting vengeance that fill Todd's soul. The same can be said for Helena Bonham Carter as the fiendish Mrs. Lovett. Sure she will occasionally descend into something approaching a hectoring screech, but consider for a moment that she's a baker who grinds people into meat and serves them up in piping hot pies!

Voices aside, both actors deliver rich, complex performances. The focus and intensity that Depp brings to his role is riveting. Within minutes of the film's opening there is no doubt that Depp will have his revenge and have it with gusto. Taking a step back from the film, realize that Todd is a thoroughly despicable character. He often kills indiscriminately, but Depp is so powerful as Todd that you eventually begin to relish his countless murders. Carter's Mrs. Lovett is, perhaps, even more of a psychopath. Slicing a throat is one thing. Butchering a man and then serving him up for dinner is quite another. Nevertheless, you delight in her, too.

As for the killings, Burton stages them in spectacularly gory fashion. The phrase 'geysers of blood' is often used casually when describing a violent film. In Sweeney Todd the phrase is explicitly correct. Depp is often obscured under the high-powered jets of plasma that repeatedly erupt from his customer's necks. Amazingly, these scenes aren't even the most disturbing. Once Todd finishes giving a 'shave', he dumps the corpse down a hole where it cracks loudly at the bottom as the skull splinters and the neck breaks cleanly. It's all completely over the top and, of course, wonderful, hilarious, inspired.

The same can be said for the film as a whole. In Sweeney Todd, Tim Burton has found material that meshes perfectly with his artistic sense. You could call it a horror film or a screwball comedy and you'd be right both times. The design is, as would be expected from a Burton picture, lavish and spectacular. The supporting cast, especially Alan Rickman and Timothy Spall, are superb. Only the love story between Johanna and Anthony falls a little flat. It's a minor quibble, though, in an otherwise outstanding film. Sweeney Todd joins Ed Wood and Edward Scissorhands as Burton's finest work. It may eventually even be considered his best.

Black Christmas movie review

This festive fright-fest was a nice surprise from what I was originally expecting. This is another horror remake (from the people behind 'Final Destination' - great film), but un-like so many others; it did manage to come up trumps; such as 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.' This is a remake of Bob Clarke's 1974 classic slasher movie, 'Black Christmas'; which actually came four years before John Carpenter's 'Halloween'. Some fans lay claim that it was the original slasher flick.

From the outside, this looks like just another of your basic 'there's a psycho hacking up a bunch of pretty girls, who are running up the stairs instead of out of the door,' and to a certain extent that's correct, it's the way this is conveyed which is interesting and enticing to watch.

The story: crazed killer, Billy Lenz, escapes his psychiatric ward and is determined to make it to his childhood home, where he was abused, by Christmas. Problem is, it's years later and the home is now a Sorority house. It's Christmas Eve and a who's who of teen/horror girl stars are there to welcome him, including Melissa (Michelle Trachtenberg , 'Buffy the vampire slayer' fame), Heather (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, 'Final Destination 3'), Dana (Lacey Chabert, 'Mean Girls') and Kelli (Katie Cassidy, 'When a stranger calls' remake.)

This movie is actually pretty good, it has a constant feeling of being watched that runs right through it and adds a sparkle to the scares, and the tension is kept high. The actresses, although spouting some awful lines at times, also say some good ones. The acting is good, and because most of the leading ladies are stars, and most of them horror stars, the audience doesn't guess which one is going to make it to the rolling credits. The story-line builds well, and there is a mounting tension, as the killer first phones the girls, and then starts to do away with them.

A similar storyline to the original 'Halloween', with a killer coming home for the holidays, there are also many similar P.O.V shots of the killer, watching the girls throughout the house. The Christmas theme bleeds in nicely with the plot, and it comes across in places (especially, the flash-backs to Billy Lenz's childhood) like something, director, Tim Burton, would dream up. The film gets darker and darker as we move through it, with some very violent scenes, and the music by Shirley Walker is great; capturing horror and Christmas all in one twisted melody. Also, the use of red and green lighting throughout (owed to Christmas) is very cool, and creates a great atmosphere.

Due to it being set in a Sorority house, and this no longer being 1974, some of the dialogue just doesn't cut it. I can't imagine many of these girls' staying in the house with a crazed serial killer, just because they can't find their 'sorority sister,' believable in 2007 - sad, but true. There is, unfortunately, the obligatory shower scene, but it's used for scares, not thrills, and so works.

Right from the start you can tell, this isn't your usual run of the mill slasher, it actually has a back story, and we do find ourselves caring for some of the characters, for example, Kelli, played by Katie Cassidy is great; plus if you hated 'Dawn' in 'Buffy the vampire slayer' - you are gonna love this movie.

PS I Love You Movie Review

While nobody can predict when death will pay them a visit and cut their life short, according to the movie P.S. I Love You, with some applied imagination and strategic planning in advance, you might be able to cheat the Grim Reaper just a little. Or in this case at least, from beyond the grave.

Not that this morbid premise sounds like ideal material for a fanciful romantic comedy. But filmmaker Richard LaGravenese (The Fisher King, The Bridges Of Madison County) takes up the challenge of juggling this life and the next for laughs, and awkwardly negotiates an often less than plausible common ground between the best of both worlds, such as they may be.

Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler are Holly and Gerry in P.S. I Love You, a stressed out young Manhattan couple into marriage meltdown at the moment, as they brawl verbally about Holly's tendency towards too much shopping, not enough 'hot, nasty sex' on their weekly to-do list, Gerry's unsexy slacker attitude toward vocational ambition, whether or not they forgot to have children along the way, and might this be very well all that there is out of life. In the midst of Holly's nightly nagging and lingering doubts about their relationship, happy-go-lucky Irish rocker import Gerry suddenly kicks the bucket. Which leaves Holly in a deep funk of guilt-ridden regret and inconsolable misery.

While concerned mom Patricia (Kathy Bates) and caring best girlfriends Denise (Lisa Kudrow) and Sharon (Gina Gershon) have no success getting Holly to dispel those full-time blues, the sudden, mysterious delivery of a series of letters from late hubby Gerry, slowly work their magic in snapping their glum gal pal out of her depressed state. The letters function like a 12-step program presumably mailed from the afterlife, nudging the stricken widow back to normalcy and even a little potential new romance. The tragicomic healing process culminates in no less than two trips back to Ireland where the couple first met, where Mom and Holly embark on a weird adventure together, to go pick up men.

P.S. I Love You and its dead letter collection plot device is far too overdone, and feels dramatically energy-inefficient and contrived to begin with. Much more effective is LaGravenese's sensitive physical and emotional layering of the complex unraveling of grief as a state of mind. And Swank gets it just right with a fine-tuned subtle expression of confusion, despondency and rage, though Holly's overly extended cranky self-pity party eventually wears out its welcome, for the characters and audience alike.

And it never quite makes sense why Holly isn't turned on by the persistent advances of the infatuated hunk played by Harry Connick Jr., even if the guy's on the eccentric side, as when he invades her private space in the local pub's john to present her with the heart he wears a little too prominently on his sleeve. In any case, P.S. I Love You could have done with a lot less of a sense of being on rewind as each posthumous letter arrives, and every time a romantic urge or mental mood swing gets reshuffled.

The first of these DVD movies is �Pirates of the Caribbean: At World�s End�. The last in the trilogy of Pirates movies, this film stars Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, and Geoffrey Rush. For this final installment, the pirates must set sail to the land of the dead to rescue Jack Sparrow from an eternity of ordering himself around so that they can assemble the pirate counsel and wage one final battle against the East India Trading Company and Davie Johns. This film was a huge success at the box-office and will be a nice addition to any fan of the previous two Pirate films.

�The Bourne Ultimatum� comes second in our list of DVD movies that has to be collected for this festive season. This is also a final movie in a trilogy series. In this movie, matt Damon plays the role of Jason Bourne who realizes himself in great trouble related to his past and starts in search of certain answers. In the search, he gets caught in the middle of a state-sponsored murder plot, which becomes a big problem for him. The interesting screen-by-screen events are a must watch.

The third best movie that needs to be put in your DVD movie collection is �Superbad� and it will entertain even adults for a long time. �Superbad� is about two best friends who get separated after high school and join two different colleges. They will have a final party before departing. However, they do not seem smart enough to get the booze to show themselves look cool in the party. This movie is surely one of the nice and funny movies of the summer. Better get the �Superbad� DVD to have full entertainment and know why people are saying that �McLovin rules�.

You can watch many free movies on the Internet. You don�t have money, but you need entertainment. Then you better turn onto the Internet where you can find number of websites that offer free movies to entertain people. It is a great fun to watch some of our favorite movies for free. You can get to see a number of movies that you have not seen in the past due to lack of money and entertain yourself in a good way.

As far as watching movies free, that are actual Hollywood productions, there are a few sites that offer some older titles that are no longer being protected by copyright law. Again, these movies can be very old.
